Here in New Orleans, we only have three major seasons: summer, hurricane and football. Undoubtedly, football season is the one we look forward to the most! From the black and gold fleur-de-lis Porta-Potty to the “Who Dat” bus that cruises around downtown, anything is capable of being caught in the black and gold crossfire during this time of year.
Saints fans have been loyal, keeping the faith for 42 years just knowing our team would participate in at least one Super Bowl. As loyal supporters we know our time will come! But before we reach for the brown paper bags this year and purposely remove the ‘S’ from the front of the team’s name, let’s take a look at what we’re working with!
Team as a whole:
Saints defense seems to be earning the respect they deserve. The best move of the offseason was bringing in defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to clean up defense and tweak it just a little, or at least enough to give the boys their confidence back. All the guys seem to feel the same way about the new and improved line. A lot of hard work, but that’s what the job calls for. These slight changes were evident in the first preseason game against the Bengals last week. Tight defense, smart moves, aggressive tackling. The defense is not completely there, but well on its way to becoming a powerhouse.
Saints offense, eh…a different story. Of course Drew Brees is an amazing quarterback and putting up numbers such as 5,069 yards but what good is an amazing quarterback with no one to back him? They’re cut out to do the job and it’s enough to get by but in the meantime, there’s still a lot of work to be done. Cleaner route running would help the offense a lot instead of hesitation and letting the opponent know what move is about to be made. With that being said, it’s not all bad. There are many players proving themselves to be reliable. We’ll start from the top with the most exciting player on the roster, Mr. Reggie Bush. Bush seems to be making the improvements necessary to become a better back, but with a knee injury that seems to constantly bother him, we’ll see if Bush’s improvements are enough to get him through the regular season. Another silent but deadly force on our team is Wide receiver Lance Moore. A few years ago, nobody knew this guy. He soon made a name for himself and quickly earned respect from the Who Dat nation when he replaced an injured Marques Colston last year. He ended this season with 928 yards and 10 touchdowns. Shoulder surgery may have been a minor setback for the upcoming year, but Moore is confident that no injuries will get in the way. The person I’m looking forward to showing the world what he has to offer is Robert Meachem. I’ll just sum it up: he’s on his way. After being plagued with injuries before even getting into the NFL good, Meachem was of course labeled as a bust. He finished last year with a mere 289 yards, but I’ll just write that off as a warm-up. Meachem has been on the grind during this offseason. He’s maintained a healthier diet and spent his freedom conditioning, a move he absolutely did not have to do. He’s another guy playing like he has something to prove, which in a way he does. Time to get that “bust” label off his name and show why he was drafted in the first place. Marques Colston and Pierre Thomas are two other players to look out for during the upcoming season.
As a whole, the Saints are the makings of a good team and have a great year to come. Maybe even good enough to be playoff bound…and no, this is not just wishful thinking.
Smart transaction:
Ok, not wanting to be harsh because I hate to see anyone go, but when it’s your time to go you have to remember the NFL is nothing but business. With that being said, Jason David is out. After an inconsistent season last year, I still defended him. After not improving, everyone agreed on this final decision and it doesn’t seem to be a bad thing. This will also give David’s replacement, Greg Fassitt, a chance to shine as a Saint. While attending Grambling State University, Fassitt had 110 tackles, 7 interceptions, and 31 passes defensed within a span of 32 games.
So there you have it. Saints aren’t perfect, but looking a lot better this season. Time to gear up for games with black and gold pride because the Saints are definitely comin’!
