I'm a Skins' fan

It is that time of year...time for X's and O's, tailgating, prognosticating, chicken wings, armchair quarterbacking, pizza, watch parties and trash talking...yes, it it time for football, specifically Washington Redskins' football. I've always been a Skins' fan, I don't remember becoming one or choosing to be one. It has always been: I am, therefore I'm a Skins fan.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are around Skins' football: spending Sunday afternoons watching the games with my parents. I remember sitting on the couch next to Daddy as he taught me the game: what the different downs meant, why they used the chains, the difference between the offense, defense and special teams, etc. I can see my Mother watching the game from the kitchen as she prepared dinner. We would yell for her to come in and see instant replays of big plays or touchdowns. For 1:00 games, we would eat after the game ended and for 4:00 games, we would eat at halftime.

And if we weren't at home, throughout the season, different family members would have watch parties, especially for rival conference or division games. There would be a lot of cheering, yelling, jumping up and down, shaking heads, cussing, eating, drinking and fun, fun, fun. All for the love of the game and each other.

This is big part of why Skins football is important to me. Whether grown men run up a field, cross a line or kick between the goal posts is irrelevant. Let's be real, they aren't curing cancer, bringing peace to the Middle East or choosing the next American Idol; however, what the Skins represent for me and thousands of others in the DC area is fun, family, fellowship and good times.
